Sony A9 III Mirrorless Camera Body Summary
The Sony A9 III introduces the world's first full-frame global shutter sensor, eliminating rolling shutter distortion on fast-moving subjects while shooting continuously at up to 120fps with full autofocus and auto exposure. It targets sports, wildlife, motorsport, news and action photographers prioritising speed and autofocus reliability over resolution.
The 24.6MP stacked Exmor RS sensor works with the BIONZ XR processor and AI Processing Unit to recognise people, animals, birds, insects, vehicles and aircraft, tracking focus across 759 phase-detection points covering approximately 95.6% of the frame. The global shutter also allows flash synchronisation at any shutter speed up to 1/80,000 sec, not possible with mechanical or conventional electronic shutters.
Alongside its stills performance, the A9 III mirrorless camera records oversampled 4K/60p and uncropped 4K/120p video, alongside 8-stop in-body stabilisation, dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots, a 9.44-million-dot EVF and an updated body with a four-axis touchscreen and dedicated Speed Boost button.
Sony A9 III Mirrorless Camera Body In More Detail
Global shutter performance
The A9 III is the world's first full-frame camera with a 24.6MP stacked Exmor RS global shutter sensor. Unlike a conventional electronic shutter, a global shutter reads every pixel simultaneously, eliminating rolling shutter distortion on fast-moving subjects or rapid camera movement during video. Because every pixel is exposed at the same instant, rapidly moving subjects such as golf clubs, racing cars and propellers retain their natural shape rather than showing rolling shutter distortion.
Paired with the BIONZ XR processor, this enables blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 120fps with full autofocus and auto exposure, and up to 120 AF/AE calculations per second to track unpredictable subjects. A dedicated Speed Boost button increases the frame rate instantly mid-burst, useful for capturing decisive moments in sports, wildlife and action photography. The fast readout also supports shutter speeds up to 1/80,000 sec, and with compatible flash units such as the HVL-F60RM2 and HVL-F46RM, flash synchronises at any shutter speed up to this maximum, allowing wide apertures and high shutter speeds with flash in bright daylight without a high-speed sync mode.
The BIONZ XR processor also records 14-bit RAW files throughout continuous shooting, preserving tonal latitude for post-processing while maintaining the camera’s maximum burst performance. Composite RAW Shooting captures four, eight, 16 or 32 images for merging in Sony Imaging Edge Desktop, reducing noise and false colour while keeping full resolution for static subjects in low light.
AI autofocus and subject recognition
The Fast Hybrid AF system combines 759 phase-detection points, covering approximately 95.6% of the frame, with a dedicated AI Processing Unit for subject detection and tracking. It recognises people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and aircraft, with an Animal/Bird mode removing the need to switch settings when photographing wildlife.
Recognition extends beyond eye detection by analysing body position and human pose, maintaining focus even when a subject turns away or their face is obscured, useful in sports and wildlife where subjects change direction quickly.
Video recording
The global shutter sensor also removes rolling shutter distortion during fast pans or moving-subject recording. The A9 III records oversampled 4K/60p from 6K capture alongside uncropped 4K/120p, so standard-speed and slow-motion footage share the same field of view without changing lenses or reframing.
Internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording supports All-Intra compression, S-Cinetone for fast delivery and S-Log3 for colour grading, providing workflows that match Sony’s Cinema Line cameras.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose the Sony A9 III over the Sony A1 II for sports and wildlife photography?
The A9 III is the stronger choice when speed matters most. Its global shutter completely eliminates rolling shutter distortion, enables blackout-free shooting at up to 120fps and supports flash synchronisation at any shutter speed up to 1/80,000 sec. The A1 II offers higher resolution at 50.1MP, making it better suited to heavy cropping, large commercial prints and subjects where maximum detail is more important than outright speed.
What is the advantage of the A9 III’s global shutter?
Unlike a conventional electronic shutter, the A9 III exposes every pixel simultaneously rather than scanning the sensor line by line. This eliminates rolling shutter distortion in both stills and video, allows blackout-free continuous shooting, supports flash synchronisation at any shutter speed and captures fast-moving subjects with their natural shape intact.
Does the global shutter reduce image quality?
The global shutter itself does not inherently reduce image quality. The A9 III delivers 24.6MP still images with excellent colour, dynamic range and high ISO performance, while adding the practical benefits of distortion-free capture, blackout-free shooting and unrestricted flash synchronisation.
Can I use flash at 1/80,000 sec with any flashgun?
No. Full-range flash synchronisation requires compatible Sony flash units such as the HVL-F60RM2 or HVL-F46RM2. Older Sony models and third-party flashguns may not support synchronisation across the camera’s full shutter speed range.
Is 24.6MP enough resolution for professional sports and wildlife photography?
For most professional sports, news, events and wildlife photography, yes. The 24.6MP sensor balances resolution with exceptional shooting speed, autofocus performance and buffer depth. Photographers who regularly make large gallery prints or crop heavily into distant subjects may prefer the higher-resolution Sony A1 II.
Does the Sony A9 III require CFexpress Type A memory cards?
No. The dual card slots accept both CFexpress Type A and SD UHS-II cards. CFexpress Type A cards are recommended for sustained 120fps continuous shooting and high-bitrate video because they clear the buffer significantly faster than SD cards.
Is the Sony A9 III suitable for video as well as photography?
Yes. Although primarily developed for professional stills photography, the A9 III records oversampled 4K/60p from 6K capture, uncropped 4K/120p and internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording with S-Cinetone and S-Log3. The global shutter also removes rolling shutter distortion, making it well suited to fast-moving video subjects.
How does Pre-Capture help with action photography?
Pre-Capture records a short sequence of images before the shutter is fully pressed, helping capture unpredictable moments that would otherwise be missed. It is particularly useful for birds taking flight, motorsport starts, sporting action and other fast-moving subjects where timing is critical.

Our Verdict
The Sony A9 III remains one of the most specialised professional cameras available. Rather than offering higher resolution, it prioritises speed, responsiveness and image quality, making it an outstanding choice for sports, wildlife, motorsport, news and event photographers where capturing the decisive moment matters more than producing the largest files.
Its global shutter sensor continues to set it apart from every other full-frame mirrorless camera, eliminating rolling shutter distortion while enabling blackout-free 120fps shooting, flash synchronisation up to 1/80,000 sec and distortion-free video. Combined with Sony’s AI subject recognition and highly configurable autofocus system, it delivers a level of speed and reliability that few cameras can match.
Hybrid creators also benefit from oversampled 4K/60p, uncropped 4K/120p and professional 10-bit recording, while the improved ergonomics, four-axis touchscreen and dual CFexpress Type A card slots support demanding daily workflows.
If your work depends on freezing peak action, tracking unpredictable subjects or delivering images quickly from the field, the A9 III remains one of the strongest reasons to invest in the Sony Alpha system.
If you’re upgrading from another camera, why not try our trade-in service which you can use to offset the cost of moving to the A9 III.
